Recycling in Waltham Forest - an overview

Recycling collections from home

Waltham Forest collects recyclables from your home on a weekly basis and they provide residents with a black recycling box. You can recycle paper, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, food and drink cans, plastic bottles, textiles, shoes, batteries and engine oil. Leave your black recycling box at the edge of your property, by 6am on your collection day.

If you live in a flat in a block or on an estate you may have access to shared bins for mixed recycling, including paper, card, plastic botles, cans, foil, glass bottles and jars.

Please note: In Waltham Forest it is compulsory to recycle the items listed above.

Green garden and kitchen food waste collections

If you are unable to compost at home Waltham Forest will collect you green garden waste and kitchen waste every two weeks for composting. They will provide you with a brown wheeled bin for your green waste and a kitchen caddy to collect your food waste in before you transfer it to the brown wheeled bin. You can line your caddy with newspaper. Please do not use cornstarch bags or plastic bags. If you do not have space for a wheeled bin they can supply reusable bags. These must be for green waste only.

You can put the following into your brown bin:

  • Grass cuttings

  • Leaves

  • Flowers

  • Plants

  • Branches up to 4in (10cm) in diameter

  • Food scraps

  • Meat, poultry and fish (cooked or uncooked)

  • Fruit and vegetables (cooked or uncooked)

  • Tea bags

  • Egg shells

Please DO NOT put these items in your brown bin:

  • Meat bones

  • Plastic bags

  • Cardboard

  • Nappies

  • Paper

  • Manure or pet waste

  • Household wood

  • Soil or stones

Local street recycling banks

Special collections

If you have a piece of furniture, a fridge, cooker or similar item which is still in good condition check out the Reuse page to see if someone else can give it a home. Alternatively the Council can collect it for you. Each household is allowed three free collections per year. This service is by appointment only. For more information or to book a collection:
