Recycling in Kingston upon Thames - an overview
Recycling collections from home
Kingston collects recycleables from your home on a weekly basis. Residents are provided with a green box and you can recycle paper, card, glass bottles and jars, cans, plastic bottles, textiles, shoes and now you can recycle telephone directories, household batteries and liquid food and drinks cartons. You can recycle flattened card by requesting a white storage bag from Kingston who will collect it weekly.
If you live in a flat on an estate you may still be able to recycle. Kingston provide orange sacks for you to recycle paper, glass bottles and jars, cans and plastic bottles.

Kitchen food waste collections
If you live in a street property, food waste is collected from your doorstep. This scheme turns your food waste into compost. Two containers are provided to residents receiving this service, a small kitchen caddie, which can be stored in your kitchen and a brown kerbside container with a self-locking lid for storgae outside.
Cooked and uncooked food can be recycled in your brown kerbside food container including:
Meat and fish scraps
Fruit and vegetable peelings
Eggs and egg shells
Diary products
Cut flowers
Tea bags and coffee grinds
You cannot use the food waste bin for:
Cooking oil
Large bones or carcasses e.g. whole chickens
Packaging
Plastic Bags
Garden waste
This is collected weekly on the same day as your recycling collection. When ready for collection, please leave your brown kerbside container with the handle upright as this locks the bin. For further information and to find out when your collection day is:

Green garden waste collections
If you cannot compost at home Kingston have recently launched their new green garden waste collection service. Residents can now choose from three levels of service as follows:
Green wheelie bin, collected weekly
Green wheelie bin, collected fortnightly
Ten biodgradable bags collected by appointment
Please note there is a cost attached to all these services. Please contact Kingston directly to find out up to date costs.
You can put the following into your sack:
Grass cuttings
Old garden or house plants
Twigs
Hedge trimmings
Flowers and weeds
Leaves
Garden prunings
Please DO NOT put these items in your sack:
Plastic pots, trays or bags
Soil, rocks and stones
Wire ties
Branches
Tree trunks, stumps or logs
Vegetable peelings or other food waste

Local street recycling banks

Special collections
If you have a piece of furniture, a fridge, cooker or similar item which is still in good condition check out the Reuse page to see if someone else can give it a home. Alternatively the Council can collect it for you. There is a charge for this service. For more information or to book a collection:
