Recycling in Bexley - an overview

Recycling collections from home

Bexley collects recycleables from your home on a weekly basis. Residents have three boxes for the collection of different materials:

  • green box for paper and cardboard

  • maroon box for mixed cans and plastic bottles

  • black box for glass bottles and jars

  • Brown wheeled bin for garden and food waste

All your recycling boxes will be emptied once a week on the same day and non-recyclable waste will be collected on the same day fortnightly. If you live in a block of flats you will be provided with colour coded recycling bins near the front of your premises or in your bin rooms. Green garden and kitchen food waste collections

If you are unable to compost at home Bexley will collect you green garden waste and kitchen waste every week for composting.

You can put the following into your bin:

  • All food scraps

  • Fruit peel and fallen fruit

  • Cooked/uncooked meat and poultry, including bones

  • Vegetables

  • Fish

  • Egg shells

  • Bread

  • Rice, spaghetti, pasta etc.

  • Tea bags

  • Grass cuttings

  • Leaves

  • Plants and flowers

  • Twigs, bark, hedge and tree clippings

  • Hay and straw

  • Untreated sawdust

  • Weeds

Please DO NOT put these items in your bin:

  • Soil, stones, gravel and rubble

  • Turf

  • Plastic bags

  • Fencing, MDF or treated wood

  • Plastics and packaging

  • Manure and pet waste

  • Branches and logs over 2inches in diameter

Local street recycling banks

Bexley also have a number of on street recycling banks for cans, glass, paper, card, shoes and textiles and plastic bottles. Some also take small electrical appliances. To find out where you nearest street recycling bank is and what you can recycle there please visit: Bexley street recycling banks

Special collections

If you have a piece of furniture, a fridge, cooker or similar item which is still in good condition check out the Reuse page to see if someone else can give it a home. Alternatively the Council can collect it for you. There is a charge for collecting these items. For more information on charges or to book a collection:
