Recycling in Barnet - an overview

Recycling collections from home

Barnet collects recycleables from your home on a weekly basis. Residents are provided with a black box and a blue box that you can fill with household materials and place out on the kerbside for collection. You can recycle:

In the black box:

  • glass bottles and jars* (please rinse)

  • paper*

  • car and household batteries

  • mobile phones

  • shoes (please place these in a bag to protect them)

  • textiles (please place these in a bag to protect them)

  • engine oil (in a sealed container)

  • yellow pages

In the blue box:

  • plastic bottles

  • cardboard

  • food tins and drink cans* (please rinse)

  • aerosols

  • foil (please rinse)

*In Barnet it is compulsory to recycle these items.

If you live in a flat above a shop a weekly recycling collection service is provided. The materials collected include: aerosols, aluminium foil, cardboard, food and drink cans, glass bottles and jars, household batteries, paper and cardboard, plastic bottles, shoes and textiles, yellow pages. Green garden and kitchen food waste collections

Barnet offer a free weekly green garden and kitchen waste collection service that is turned into compost. This is an opt-in scheme and you will need to contact the council directly to order your bin. All green garden and kitchen waste is to be placed together loosely into the bin. Please do not put any type of plastic into the bin.

You can put the following into your bin:

  • Meat and fish (cooked and uncooked)

  • Eggs and egg shells

  • Fruit and vegetables

  • Pasta, bread, rice, noodles

  • Dairy products

  • Tea bags and coffee grounds

  • Hedge and tree prunings, branches up to 8cm (3”) in diameter

  • Grass clippings

  • Flowers and weeds

  • Garden fruit, vegetables and windfalls

Please DO NOT put these items in your bin:

  • Meat bones or carcasses

  • Plastic bags or sacks (including compostable, biodegradable or degradable bags)

  • Cardboard or packaging

  • Paper and newspaper (put in your Black Box)

  • Pet waste

  • Soil or rubble

Green bins which contain any of the above items will not be emptied. Waste in plastic bags will not be collected.

Special collections

If you have a piece of furniture, a fridge, cooker or similar item which is still in good condition check out the Reuse page to see if someone else can give it a home.
